 SMART Goals ImageNow that Christmas has come and gone, many of us are thinking about our New Year’s resolutions.  Most of these resolutions center on health, fitness and weight loss.  All too often these resolutions have fallen to the wayside a couple of months later.  Unrealistic expectations often lead to frustration and discouragement; this is no way to start the New Year!  Fitness blogger, Dan Marzullo has a better way!  Instead of making resolutions, try setting SMART goals.  Follow this 5-step process for fitness goal setting to keep you on track all year long!

5 Steps to S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting

Creating a step-by-step action plan for achieving your goals significantly improves the chances of being successful.  A detailed outline allows you to focus 100 percent of your energy on execution. S.M.A.R.T. goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely. Here are 5 steps to S.M.A.R.T. goal setting:

1.Set specific goals

Often times failure to reach a goal is simply due to the fact that the goal was too broad. Setting a goal to “lose weight” is great but it is not specific enough. How much weight do you want to lose? Why do you want to lose weight? Drawing a clear picture is essential to staying motivated.

2.Measure your goal

With a clear goal in mind, the next step is to decide the best way to measure progress and track improvement. This step is crucial for overcoming plateaus and setbacks. If progress comes to a halt, you can identify the changes that need to be made in order to continue moving forward. Without a track record, it’s much harder to determine what needs to be changed to break through a sticking point.

3.Create achievable steps

An effective way to keep steady progress is by setting mini goals. Mini goals are baby steps that work toward an overall goal. For example, it takes a substantial amount of time to lose 50 pounds. Therefore, setting a mini goal to lose 1 to 2 pounds each week is much less intimidating. Determine what mini goals you can set to work toward your ultimate goal.

4.Determine goal relevance

Once a specific goal has been determined, how it will be measured, and the steps necessary to achieve it, you must recognize how the goal is relevant to your life. As you write out your action plan, jot down the ways that this feat will improve all of the areas of your life. This reflective process can spark further motivation to take action.

5.Set a date

Lastly, it’s important to set a deadline for reaching your goal. Determining an exact month, day, and year that you’ll achieve this goal creates a sense of urgency. Urgency helps you stay motivated to put in the work each and every day. Mark the date on your calendar, put it in your phone, and create a countdown to engrave it in your mind.
